Less is more… Sometimes.

Usually I’m working on a small and low key project, so you’ll usually find me packing real, real light. Sometimes it’s questionable if I’ll even have a flash with me, depending on what I’m doing of course. For a class/workshop I’m taking we were required to capture the moment of action related to sports. I was thinking I could do the usual ubiquitous sunset shots with joggers running dragging my shutter till I got the motion blur I thought necessary.

Turns out I have alot of expensive gear that doesn’t get the work out it should. So I grabbed a pair pocket wizards and 2 speed lights and off I went. I met my friend Kyle, quickly ran through what I was after and we went straight to the end of his driveway and set up on the road in front of his place. I wanted to try my hand at some cross lighting for that dramatic feel. It was dark so it was easy to loose the background and just slightly illuminate the road. Having wireless remotes is a wonderful thing to have and I think it defiantly aides in hands on learning off camera lighting. Pocket wizard also has the zone controller now and I think it’s worth getting for on the fly power adjustments for speed lights.

Scouting…. Part 2?

Some discussions around trends, staying current, and thinking outside the box can bring to life so many interesting ideas. Is a place where you buy food a good place for engagement photos? Of course it is! Isles and isles of color, fun displays, fresh fruits and vegetables, all you need to do is add the talent and some romance. You might have met your special someone at a certain grocery

store why not relive the experience and capture it! My recent travels brought me to florida so I thought I could share these examples for an idea from their local SweetBay Grocery Store.

Pumped up Kicks

It wont surprise me if these just aren’t you…. but I wouldn’t judge you if you had a pair in your collection. That being said, every shoe has its purpose and function. That function is to make you feel and look good, so don’t forgot about your feet when thinking about that next photo-shoot whether your the client or the photographer.

Location Scouting

Jelly Bean Wall - Candy Shoppe Clifton Hill Niagara

Continuing along with the Sheridan Certificate Program I’ve had the wonderful opportunity to participate in Weddings Vol. 2! Learning the in’s and out’s to a successful wedding or engagement shoot there is a major element that needs to be addressed. The topic is location scouting, vitally important to both the client and the photographer. I wanted to show you a few examples of some vibrant backgrounds that I recently found. These are always fun and can help you achieve some great looking images. I hope you enjoy!

Tony Allen @ Phoenix

I was invited by a co-worker to see a live band this past Friday, turns out it was due time to see a live show and I jumped on the opportunity. Tony Allen was playing at the Phoenix Concert Theatre in Toronto. I was not familiar with the venue or the talent so I had no idea what to expect. After seeing the show I can say they play amazing afro-beat and Mr Allen is known as one of the greatest drummers on the planet. We end up having an extra ticket and my friend Thorpe generously gave it away at the door to someone waiting in line. I assure the door man my large camera bag is just my purse, more like a satchel if you will, and he need not worry about it. Through the ropes and up the stairs, we bomb past the coat check because Toronto is still frigid!

We finally get inside and the mood is already set! Low lighting with DJ medicineman playing a set before the show. Straight to the bar and we grab a few pints anticipating the opening artist. The show opener was Prince Enoki’s Insect Orchestra, what a pleasant and distinct sound they had. What a great atmosphere and crowd to boot, its obvious everyone is enjoying the music. Soon after Tony Allen and his crew are on stage, and it’s on! The place is packed and jumpin, I’m sweating and firing through memory cards like crazy. I’t was almost like I wanted to run out of memory cards so I could just put my camera away enjoy the rest of the show.

CONGRATULATIONS CHUCK & LINDSAY!

Some time ago a happily married couple approached me about doing some maternity photos. The couple happen to be long time friends of mine so I was more than happy to oblige. I am always up for new challenges so I was excited to try a new genre (to me) of photography. I set up a seamless backdrop and a single light in a softbox and we were ready to get started.

We went over ideas that we had previously discussed and checked out some galleries on-line for inspiration. It wasn’t long before we had all the planned shots taken care of. As you can see over on the left the rest of the time was just spent having fun!

Congratulations Chuck & Lindsay on your beautiful baby boy!
